Hair Porosity: What It Is and Why the Float Test Fails

Hair porosity is how readily your cuticle layer lets water and products in and out. Genetics sets your baseline; bleach, color, heat and UV raise it by damaging the cuticle. You can estimate yours from drying time and how products behave on your hair, but the popular strand-in-a-glass float test is unreliable: it mostly measures oils, product residue and surface tension, not porosity.

What is hair porosity, actually?
Porosity describes how easily water and cosmetic ingredients pass through the cuticle, the overlapping shingle-like scales that wrap every hair fiber, and into the cortex beneath.
A hair fiber is built like a cable: a protein cortex in the middle, wrapped in 5 to 10 layers of flat cuticle scales that overlap like roof shingles. When those scales lie flat and intact, the fiber resists water uptake and holds on to its internal moisture. When they are lifted, chipped or partly missing, water and product move in and out much more freely. That traffic rate is porosity, and hair-fiber science treats it as a measurable physical property: researchers quantify it as pore volume and surface area, and both increase measurably after chemical and UV damage research-backed [2].
- Genetics sets the baseline. Cuticle thickness, scale geometry and the fiber's natural surface lipids vary between people and hair types, so two heads of virgin hair can sit at different points on the porosity scale.
- Damage moves you up the scale, in one direction. Bleaching, permanent color, relaxers, perms, hot tools and UV exposure all degrade the cuticle and its lipid coating. Weathering does it slowly too, which is why your ends, the oldest hair on your head, are always more porous than your roots research-backed [1].
- Porosity is a spectrum, not three boxes. Low, medium and high are convenient labels for a continuous property, and one head of hair usually spans a range from roots to ends.
Two honest caveats before the internet's favorite test. First, the precise lab methods, gas sorption, tensile work, microscopy, are not available at home, so every home assessment is an estimate. Second, porosity is one variable among several, alongside curl pattern, strand thickness and scalp oil production, and it matters mainly for how you condition, seal and process, not for every product decision you make.
Why is the float test unreliable?
Because whether a strand floats is dominated by surface oils, product residue and water surface tension, not by porosity. As a porosity measurement it earns a mixed evidence rating at best.
The float test says: drop a clean strand in a glass of water; if it floats your porosity is low, if it sinks it is high. It is the most repeated porosity advice online, and it does not measure what it claims to measure.
- Surface tension holds almost anything that light. A single hair weighs on the order of tens of micrograms. Water's surface film can support a steel needle; it can certainly support a hair regardless of the fiber's internal pore structure. Whether the film eventually breaks depends heavily on how the strand landed and what is on its surface.
- Your hair is coated, and the test reads the coating. Sebum, leave-in conditioner, silicone residue from your last wash, styling products and hard-water minerals all change how water wets the strand. An oily film repels water and keeps damaged hair floating; a squeaky-clean surfactant-stripped strand wets fast and can sink even if it is healthy. Chemists who have looked at the test conclude it tracks surface chemistry and wettability, not porosity [5].
- Even "wash the strand first" does not rescue it. Shampooing changes the surface you are testing, and detergent residue itself lowers surface tension. You end up measuring your cleaning step.
- It has no scientific pedigree. Actual porosity measurement uses gas sorption, differential scanning, or microscopy on prepared fibers [2]. The float test appears in no cosmetic-chemistry or trichology literature as a validated method. It is a piece of internet folklore that spread because it is cheap and feels scientific.
Wettability and porosity are related, badly. Damaged hair is usually both more porous and more wettable, which is why the test sometimes agrees with reality. But the correlation runs through a surface that is constantly modified by sebum and products, so any individual result is noise. What are better home signals of porosity?
Drying time, whether products sit on the hair or disappear into it, and your processing history. None is a lab measurement, but together they beat a glass of water.
These signals are still estimates, but each one observes the property you actually care about, water and product moving in and out of the fiber, over your whole head and over time, instead of one contaminated strand for one minute.
- Drying time, relative to hair like yours. Low-porosity hair takes ages to saturate in the shower and ages to air dry, because water gets in and out slowly. High-porosity hair soaks instantly and can air dry fast for its length and density, because nothing is holding the water in. Compare against similar length and thickness, not against your fine-haired friend. - Product sit versus product absorb. On low-porosity hair, leave-ins and oils tend to sit on the surface: hair feels coated, greasy or filmed quickly, and water beads on it. On high-porosity hair, products seem to vanish: hair drinks conditioner and still feels rough, dry or tangly an hour later.
- Processing and heat history, the strongest predictor. Bleached, highlighted, permed, relaxed or daily-hot-ironed hair is more porous than it was before processing, full stop; chemical damage measurably increases pore volume and surface area research-backed [2]. If your lengths have been through bleach, you do not need a test to know your ends run high.
- Behavior in humid weather. High-porosity hair swells, frizzes and loses styles fast in humidity because moisture exchange is rapid. Low-porosity hair is comparatively weatherproof.
Read the signals per region: roots near-virgin, ends weathered is the normal pattern, and it means your ends need the high-porosity playbook even if your roots do not.
How do the signals map to low, medium and high porosity?
Use this table as a scorecard across several wash days. Where most rows agree is your working answer; your ends usually sit a column to the right of your roots.

If your answers scatter across columns, that is normal: porosity is continuous, and most heads are medium with high-porosity ends. Build your routine for the mid-lengths, then add targeted care for the ends.
Low porosity: what actually helps?
Give conditioners time and gentle warmth to work, keep films light, and clarify before buildup drags your hair down. Skip the expensive workarounds.
Low-porosity hair's problem is traffic in: conditioning ingredients penetrate slowly, and heavy products accumulate on the surface instead of absorbing. The fixes are mostly about patience and restraint, not special products.
- Warmth during deep conditioning. Diffusion into the hair fiber speeds up with temperature; that much is standard hair physics research-backed [1]. The home ritual built on it, a shower cap and a warm towel or a few minutes of low blow-dryer heat over conditioner, is a reasonable, low-risk application of that principle rather than a tested protocol convention. Comfortably warm is enough; you are encouraging diffusion, not cooking the fiber.
- Lighter, water-based leave-ins over heavy butters. Thick oils and butters mostly sit on low-porosity hair and read as grease by day two. Preferring lighter lotions and sprays is sensible product-matching, not evidence-graded science convention.
- Clarify on a schedule. Because films build up instead of absorbing, an occasional clarifying or stronger-surfactant wash restores slip and volume. Follow with normal conditioning.
- Apply conditioner to soaked hair and leave it longer. Slow saturation means the first minutes of a rinse-out conditioner do less here; a few extra minutes cost nothing.
What you can skip: "porosity opener" sprays, alkaline pre-treatments sold to "lift the cuticle", and anything promising to change your porosity type. Deliberately lifting the cuticle is damage with better branding. High porosity: what actually helps?
Prevent further damage, film and seal what you have, use pre-wash coconut oil, and treat bond builders as promising but oversold. Nothing rebuilds a stripped cuticle.
Start with the honest frame: hair fiber is dead tissue, and cuticle scales that bleach dissolved are not growing back. "Repair" products make damaged hair behave and look better, sometimes dramatically, by coating, filling and reinforcing. That is real value, but it is management, not reversal. Permanent improvement comes from growing new hair while protecting it better than the last batch.
- Stop the bleeding first. Space out or downgrade chemical services, cut iron temperatures, protect before every heat pass. High-porosity hair damages faster than virgin hair under the same insult, so prevention pays double here.
- Coconut oil before washing. The best-evidenced cheap intervention for porous hair: applied pre-wash, coconut oil penetrates the fiber and reduced protein loss from washing and combing by up to 39 percent in published testing, where mineral and sunflower oil did nothing comparable research-backed [4]. Apply to dry lengths 1 to 8 hours before shampooing.
- Condition richer, then seal. Porous hair takes up conditioning agents readily and loses water just as readily. A leave-in on damp hair followed by a few drops of oil or serum slows the moisture exchange that drives frizz and roughness. The layering ritual itself is stylist convention, but a sensible one convention.
- Bond builders, honestly. Products in the Olaplex category claim to rebuild broken disulfide and other bonds inside the fiber. Some published and brand-supported work shows measurable changes in damaged hair's properties, and many users of bleached hair report real handling improvements; independent replication is thin relative to the size of the marketing claims, and "repairs bonds" outruns what public data demonstrates mixed evidence. Reasonable to try on bleached hair; unreasonable to expect restored virgin hair.
- Trim on a schedule. The most porous centimeters are the oldest. Removing them is the only true reset available.

How is "porosity" used to sell you products?
The label turns one continuous physical property into a shopper identity, then routes each identity to a product line. The physics is real; the segmentation is marketing.
Porosity is genuinely useful for two or three decisions: how heavy your leave-ins should be, how patient your conditioning step needs to be, and how carefully your processed lengths need protecting. The industry has stretched it much further convention:
- Type-and-target quizzes. A two-minute quiz, often anchored on the float test, assigns you a porosity type and a matching bundle. The quiz's job is conversion, not measurement; the same shampoo formula frequently appears across "types" with different front labels.
- Problem invention for low porosity. Low-porosity hair is closer to healthy hair behaving normally than to a condition needing correction, but "product just sits on your hair" converts well into openers, lightweight lines and clarifying systems you may only occasionally need.
- "Repair" language for high porosity. Damage management sells better as damage reversal. Watch for before-and-after images where the after is simply conditioned, styled hair; a good conditioner produces that photo without rebuilding anything.
- Porosity as a gatekeeper claim. "This did not work for you because you used it on the wrong porosity" is unfalsifiable and keeps you shopping within the brand rather than questioning the product.
